Summary:

Meta just announced a deal for up to 6.6GW of nuclear power by 2035 to power their AI infrastructure.

The plan includes:

  •  Up to 8 Natrium Small Modular Reactor units from Bill Gates-backed Terrapower with the first dual unit set for delivery as soon as 2032
  • Up to 1.2GW from Sam Altman-backed Oklo which could come online as early as 2030
  • Power purchase agreements for more than 2.1GW from existing Vistra nuclear power plants

Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer said in Meta's media release "Nuclear energy will help power our AI future, strengthen our country’s energy infrastructure, and provide clean, reliable electricity for everyone."

Quote Attributable to Will Shackel, Founder of Nuclear for Australia:

"This announcement from Meta means more than 20 small modular reactors could be constructed in the United States before 2035."

"This is a wakeup call for the government. Our nuclear power ban restricts us from using advanced nuclear technology and isolates us from our partners. With Australia set to badly miss its renewable energy targets, we need the government to put all clean energy options on the table to power a future modern Australian economy."
