“Today’s annual climate statement to parliament shows that Labor’s renewable plus fossil fuel approach is not enough to get Australia where we need to be when it comes to lowering emissions.
“The latest emissions projections report reveals that Australia will fall 1 per cent short of the 2030 target, but more concerningly, the projections show that by 2035 Australia is only on track to bring emissions down by 48 per cent, against a target of 62-70 per cent.
“The International Atomic Energy Agency estimates that nuclear power can be introduced into a nuclear newcomer country in as little as 10 years, and Australia already has its feet in the water thanks to our nuclear experience at ANSTO and investments in the AUKUS submarine program.
“Labor still has time to change its roll out plan to achieve a clean energy future, but they must put politics and ideologies aside and focus on science.
“Reliable nuclear baseload energy will deliver far better environmental, economic and health outcomes than continuing on the current path of fossil fuels holding up renewables.
“Recent polling conducted by YouGov shows 47% of Australians support developing nuclear energy. The public is open to the discussion, so parliament should be too - we need to lift the bans to ensure we can fully explore the potential nuclear energy holds for Australia."
