Make a submission to the Inquiry into the role of Western Australia in the global effort on decarbonisation
In recent weeks there has been increasing speculation that Western Australian Premier Roger Cook is looking at lifting the state's uranium mining ban. He told 9News Perth that his government was "continuing to work with [the uranium] industry around what their expectations and what the future potential for these things [uranium mining] are."
The new Inquiry into role of Western Australia in the global effort on decarbonisation presents an opportunity to push the case for the uranium mining ban to be lifted. Secure uranium supply will be critical to achieving decarbonisation with nuclear power globally. 31 countries signed up to at least triple nuclear power capacity by 2050.
The additional benefits to WA of this policy are outlined in research from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA which suggests that Western Australia has the potential to export $1billion worth of uranium each year creating 9,000 jobs (including indirect jobs) in Western Australia.
