This announcement is a part of the broader nuclear renaissance occurring around the world, in part triggered by the increased clean energy demand for AI and data centres.
Recently, there have been reports that Oracle is intending to build an SMR-powered data center, Microsoft & OpenAI are partnering on a $100 Billion USD data center powered by alternative energy sources such as nuclearand an announcement from Amazon that they brought a nuclear-powered data center from Talen.
Additionally major leaders in AI such as Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg and Craig Scroggie have all recently communicated the critical need for nuclear energy in the energy mix.
According to Nuclear for Australia founder Will Shackel "Australia needs more energy, not less. We are struggling to even meet our current demand, so what is our plan to power the industries of tomorrow?"
"The increasing demand for abundant reliable energy for data centres is just one of the reasons it is crucial that Australia lifts the ban on nuclear energy.
We call on politicians to immediately lift the ban on nuclear energy to ensure that Australia doesn't miss out on the AI revolution.
