Background

Currently the Australian Parliament is holding a bipartisan house committee into nuclear energy in Australia. Nuclear for Australia strongly encourages supporters to create a submission.

 

Why a submission?

What is a submission?

A submission to a parliamentary committee is a written document where you can share your expertise or perspective on an issue to members of parliament. 

Why write a submission:

  • Inform parliamentarians 
  • Provide evidence for the report and dissenting report
  • Potential to be summoned for testimony

 

How to write a submission

Requirements:

  • Must be over 250 words
  • Be prepared solely for the purposes of the inquiry
  • Not have been published anywhere else
  • Be relevant to the terms of reference (see below)
  • Be received by the committee before the due date (November 15th 2024)
  • Include the name, postal or email address, and contact number of the person or organisation making the submission

Other Tips:

  • Submissions can be in multiple formats such as a PDF, word document, pictures or even a short video
  • On the online submission you are able to upload multiple documents including a coversheet, public submission and a confidential attachment
  • Focus on your expertise or personal experience
  • Reference claims with authoritative sources
  • Do not copy or replicate other submissions, originality is important

The committee has the following terms of reference:

  1. deployment timeframes;
  2. fuel supply, and transport of fuel;
  3. uranium enrichment capability;
  4. waste management, transport and storage;
  5. water use and impacts on other water uses;
  6. relevant energy infrastructure capability, including brownfield sites and transmission lines;
  7. Federal, state, territory and local government legal and policy frameworks;
  8. risk management for natural disasters or any other safety concerns;
  9. potential share of total energy system mix;
  10. necessary land acquisition;
  11. costs of deploying, operating and maintaining nuclear power stations;
  12. the impact of the deployment, operation and maintenance of nuclear power stations on electricity affordability; and
  13. any other relevant matter.
